Is My XRP Address Public? Understanding On-Chain Privacy

Short answer: yes, and by design. The XRP Ledger is a public, transparent blockchain, and understanding exactly what that means — no more, no less — helps set realistic expectations about privacy.

What "public" actually means here

Every XRP Ledger account's balance and complete transaction history is visible to anyone who looks it up, with no special access or permission required. There's no equivalent of a private bank statement in the way traditional finance works. Our own Wallet Lookup tool and Rich List are both direct illustrations of this: they simply surface on-chain data that was never actually hidden, for any address, to anyone who asks.

See exactly what's publicly visible for any XRP address, including yours.

Pseudonymous, not anonymous

An XRP address isn't inherently tied to your real-world identity by the protocol itself — there's no name field attached to an account. That makes it pseudonymous: activity is tracked and fully visible under an identifier, but that identifier doesn't automatically reveal who controls it. This is a meaningfully different thing from anonymous, where activity can't be linked back to an actor at all — and XRP, like essentially every public blockchain, is the former, not the latter.

How pseudonymity breaks down in practice

Several ordinary things can connect an address to a real identity:

What this means practically

If privacy matters to you for a specific transaction, using a fresh address rather than a long-reused public one reduces (though doesn't eliminate) the amount of unrelated activity an observer can associate with it. But don't treat any public blockchain address as private in the way a bank account number effectively is — assume that anything sent to or from an address could, in principle, be traced by someone motivated enough to try, especially if that address has ever touched a KYC-verified exchange account.

For the flip side of this same transparency — how it lets anyone verify who holds the most XRP — see Who Are the Biggest XRP Holders?. For practical steps before sending funds to an address (a different concern from privacy, but related), see How to Verify an XRP Wallet Address Before Sending Funds.
