How Does XRP Differ From Bitcoin and Ethereum? A Beginner's Comparison

Bitcoin, Ethereum, and XRP are often mentioned in the same breath as "major cryptocurrencies," but they were built with different goals and work in meaningfully different ways under the hood. This is a descriptive comparison, not a ranking — none of this is investment advice, and "different" isn't the same as "better" or "worse" for any particular purpose.

Consensus mechanism

How a network agrees on the state of its ledger is one of the most fundamental technical differences:

• Bitcoin uses proof-of-work: a global network of miners competes to solve computationally expensive puzzles, and the winner gets to add the next block. This is secure and battle-tested but energy-intensive and relatively slow to finalize transactions.
• Ethereum moved to proof-of-stake (completing its transition in 2022): validators are chosen to propose and confirm blocks based on the amount of ETH they've staked as collateral, rather than computational work. This is far less energy-intensive than proof-of-work.
• XRP Ledger uses its own distinct consensus protocol, sometimes called the XRP Ledger Consensus Protocol: a set of independent validators agree on the order and validity of transactions through a voting process, without mining or staking in the Bitcoin/Ethereum sense. This is a genuinely different design lineage from both proof-of-work and proof-of-stake.

What each was primarily designed for

• Bitcoin was designed as a peer-to-peer electronic cash system, and its dominant modern narrative has shifted heavily toward being a store of value ("digital gold") — a scarce, hard-to-censor asset people hold rather than spend day-to-day.
• Ethereum was designed as a general-purpose smart contract platform — a base layer for running decentralized applications, from DeFi protocols to NFTs to other tokens, not just a payments network.
• XRP and the XRP Ledger were designed with a focus on fast, low-cost value transfer, including as a potential bridge asset between different currencies (see our guide on Ripple's On-Demand Liquidity for how that's used commercially) — its core use case is closer to payments and liquidity than to smart contract infrastructure, although the XRPL has added more programmability over time.

Transaction speed and cost, generally

At a general level (exact figures vary with network conditions and aren't the point here): Bitcoin transactions typically take significantly longer to finalize and can carry higher fees during busy periods, since blocks are produced roughly every 10 minutes. Ethereum's speed and fees also vary with network demand, and its smart-contract activity can drive fees up during congestion. The XRP Ledger is generally recognized for settling transactions in a few seconds with very low, predictable fees, which lines up with its payments-focused design goal — though as with any network, always check current real-world conditions rather than relying on a fixed number from an article.

What this means for you

This isn't a "pick a winner" comparison — these three networks were built to emphasize different tradeoffs (security/decentralization philosophy, programmability, transaction speed and cost), and which of those tradeoffs matters most depends entirely on what you're trying to do.
